March Meeting with City of Burien PaRCS – Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services

Maintenance and Repair Request

On March 5th members of our organization’s board met with representatives from the City of Burien’s PaRCS to discuss and inspect the WWI Memorial Wall. The wall was constructed in 1963 by the American Legion as a tribute and memorial to service members lost in WWI and to honor the Elm tree lined roadway known today as Des Moines Memorial Drive.

After more than seven decades the Memorial Wall is beginning to show its age. Constructed of brick with a South Dakota Granite face, several areas have loose or missing mortar allowing water intrusion to slowly weather the monument.

Several items were discussed including mortar repair between the granite slabs, restoration or cleaning of the lettering on the face of the wall, and possible repairs or replacement to the original lighting system that has been in-operable and was removed many years ago.

Both the American Legion and the Burien City PaRCS are looking into aspects of these repairs and upkeep for subsequent participation and possible future funding. More information will be posted as updates become available.
